Information
Cows are four-legged, cloven-hooved animals that live in groups called herds. They are herbivores, consuming only vegetation, mostly grass and have four stomachs, chewing the cud to help them to digest. Cows have been domesticated by humans for 10,000 years for meat, milk, and for their general usefulness. Because of their large size and strength, cattle has been used to help with farming, able to pull heavy loads.
Other than meat, the by products of cows are used for many purposes. Milk is one of the most popular products produced by cows, as they can be milked more than once in a day. Cow's milk is also used to create cheese, butter, sour cream, yogurt, whipped cream, ice cream, and many other dairy products. Cow skin, called leather, is widely used in the clothing, shoes, and upholstery. There are numerous by-products from cow hair, bones, organs, horns, hooves, ranging from collagen supplements to fertilizer.
Cows are considered to be a sacred animal in Hinduism, and it is forbidden to kill or consume them. Cows are given special privileges to roam freely in much fo India.
There has been concern among many that the methane produced from the estimated 1 billion of domesticated cows has led to an increase in greenhouse gases, which is said to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and lead to climate change.
