It‘s exciting to bring home a brand new yoga mat and practice on it for the first time. But any new mat with a smooth surface such as the Manduka mat which is popular among Ashtangis can quickly turn into a slip and slide.
A Mysore rug or yoga towel can help with this, but it’s best to just go ahead and condition your mat.
How to Condition Your Yoga Mat
Spray your mat with a thin layer of water.
Cover with a generous amount of sea salt and let sit overnight.
Scrub with a damp washcloth. Rinse and repeat until all of the salt is removed.
Allow to air dry.
