Information

Islam is an Abrahamic religion founded in approximately 610 CE, whose name comes from the word for "peace" and "submission to God," called Allah in Arabic. Believers in Islam are called Muslims. Islam was founded by the prophet Muhammad, who received revelation from God, which was written down in the Qur'an. The Qur'an is said to be part three of God's revelation, following the Jewish Tanakh and the Christian New Testament.

Muslims believe the Qur'an is the pure, unedited revelation of God and encourage believers to learn Arabic so they can read and understand the revelation in its most pure form. There are other writings by Muhammad's contemporaries and later scholars. The Sunnah, comparable to the four Gospels, document Muhammad's his life, marriages, birth and death of his children, teachings, and sayings those around him overhead. The hadith, which are a collection of commentary and explanation of the Qur'an by scholars, which vary in strength. Together, these help believers to follow the straight path toward Jannah or Heaven.

One starts on the path of Islam by declaring that there is no God but God and that Muhammad is his messenger.
