Spiritual Essence Yoga was established in 2003 in the heart of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. At the time, there were no yoga classes in the area and founder Dana A. Smith wanted a way to share the transformational practice of yoga. The rate of stress-related illnesses began to increase and so did the need for ways for people to manage their health.

Classes began very small but soon began to increase through word of mouth. As more and more people sought yoga for healing and growth there was a need for more space. This led to the expansion from Dana’s home to Brooke Lane in 2008, and then to Brown Station Road in 2015. Spiritual Essence Yoga offers an array of classes for all bodies, ages, abilities and levels of flexibility and welcomes everyone as family.

Our mission at Spiritual Essence Yoga & Wellness is to empower others to live a healthier and happier life by creating balance in their lives. It is our belief that good health begins in the mind, and that we can all live a full life. We strive to empower clients to take control of their health and well-being and offer a safe, non-competitive and supportive environment. Our yoga and meditation classes and holistic wellness services provide a way to reconnect mentally, physically and spiritually.

Dana A. Smith is the founder and owner of Spiritual Essence Yoga and the creative visionary behind the international YES! Yoga Has Curves movement. She is a wife, mother, certified yoga instructor, author, yoga teacher trainer, master life coach and holistic health practitioner. For almost 20 years, she has been a pioneer for inclusive yoga in the West with a simple, yet profound, message: “Yoga is for EVERYbody!”.
