When doubt creeps in, sometimes we can be our own worst enemy. How to stop getting in your own way.
1. Stay the Course
Sometimes, right when things are getting good, doubt will sink in. We'll start to question ourselves and sometimes this voice can become so loud that we may even contemplate stopping altogether.
This is actually a sign that you're on the right track. It's natural to question how good things are, but be certain that randomly wanting to quit, especially when things are going ok, is only showing you that you are on the verge of a breakthrough. It's always the hardest right before the breakthrough, so hold on and keep pushing even harder.
2. Take Inventory
At times it can be hard to identify what is really going on because what appears to be bothering us on the surface is really just a symptom of an underlying issue.
If you are feeling a large and sudden amount of dis-ease, consider what is really the cause by taking inventory of your feelings and the setting you are in including the people, recent events, and outstanding items that need to be taken care of.
Is something left unresolved? Or is there a nagging issue that is hard to deal with?
Focus on the specific issue and nip it in the bud right now. Do not allow small issues to become big ones simply because you didn't pay attention to them festering in the background.
3. Encourage Yourself
You need to be your #1 fan, your biggest advocate, your personal cheerleader. Unless you are a really adorable puppy, few of us have people around constantly giving us lavish praise simply for existing. But sometimes, that is what we need. Some kind words for no reason, and a pat on the back for the awesome job you've been doing of just getting up and trying every day.
So be that person for yourself. Don't wait around for a mate, a boss, or a friend to tell you what you want to hear. Tell yourself.
Make a list of 2-3 affirmations and repeat them to yourself at least once a day. If you get good at this, you might even try repeating these personal mantras throughout the day.
4. Find an Accountabilibuddy
Having someone to keep you on track can make the difference between letting things slide and staying laser focused. This person can take many forms.
Many people hire a coach specifically for the purpose of having an sharp, external set of eyes to measure how they're doing, and the improvement can be significant.
Another method is simply finding a like-minded friend to discuss plans or projects with. Ideally, solidify these discussions into a weekly time slot so that you both prioritize the time you have together.
