The Gospel | New Testament

There are 27 books in the New Testament and numerous "lost" books that are not in the traditional canon.

There are 27 books in the New Testament of the Bible, all written before 120 CE. Over the centuries, different sects of Christianity had slightly different canons. While some of the books remained pretty consistent, such as the Gospel of Mark, others, such as some of the letters by Paul were not. The current canon of the Bible was canonized by the Catholic church in the 4th century CE. Athanasius, the Bishop of Alexandria, listed the 27 books we see today as the official canon in his Easter letter in 367, calling for the Egyptian church to cease use of their gnostic texts. This list was affirmed by the Council of Rome in 382 and then onward. In 1945, 13 papyrus codices were discovered with 46 different texts, 41 of which had previously been totally lost. Some or many of these are likely the texts the Catholic church asked to be excluded from the canon 367.

There are many books that were in other canons, other than the 27 listed in the New Testament. Many of these books were cherished and viewed as the inspired word of God and the real works of apostles after the death of Jesus.
