Information
The nostril piercing is a piercing near the base of the nose on the side, and can be placed on the right, left, or both. Nostril piercings come in many forms and are often straight posts or small hoops.
The nose is closely related to the nadis, or the internal pathways of the body. Nadi shodhana, for example is a yoga pranayama (breath control) practice of alternate nostril breathing to clear these internal pathways. The left side of the body is said to be connected to the feminine energy, and the right side is connected to the masculine energy. Depending on what a person wants to balance or enhance, may impact where they choose to place their nostril piercing.
In India, young women who are ready for marriage, often pierce the left nostril to enhance their feminine energy. It is also believed that this piercing can alleviate some of the cramps and difficulties related to PMS and menstruation. However, both men and women have been known to get nostril piercings on either side in different parts of the world.
