Grand rising, family.
Tapas. The fire of transformation and purification.
Quite literally, tapas is heat or fire. In our Ashtanga classes, we literally warm the room to help you sweat. Like a piece of metal being bent back and forth over and over again, Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutations warm us up.
And it's also, something like Passion. The inner fire of determination.
The physical tapas are only temporary. Just like warmed food that you let sit on the counter. It gets cold again. This type of heat is inconsistent and unreliable.
But inner tapas, the fire that makes you relentless and refuse to give up - the kind of fire that makes you change up your whole life. It's something different altogether. It takes time for this type of tapas to develop and grow. But once you tend to this type of fire, it's hard to extinguish.
But here's the catch...
Most of us want to be transformed but don't want to get hot. We want to become pure metal but hop out when the flames get to be too much. We flinch. We turn the air on or put some water in the fire just to turn it down a little. Or we just hop out of the fire completely.
Oftentimes, this is when the inner work starts to seriously present itself, when things come to a head. Another way of putting this is when the practice triggers us. If we quit or tamp down the fire before it has a chance to build, we can end up disillusioned with yoga because it "didn't work".
But if it's not triggering you or a little bit too hot for comfort, it's not doing its work.
It’s getting hot, but don’t put out the fire. Let the tapas rise.
Love you, family 👑👑
