Sit down on the heels or place a block or blanket underneath the seat.
Variations
Virasana is traditionally practiced with the knees together, sitting on the heels. As you are learning this posture, it is good to place some type of support underneath the seat so that you can relax into the posture, breathing into it. A block or a blanket are good.
If you feel any knee discomfort, you may also consider separating the knees.
