There are many postures for prayer to show humility and worship. Prostrating, or bowing with the face on the ground, is one posture for praying, showing humility, and deep respect.
The experience of praying with the head to the ground is deeply humbling and can be a wonderful way to ask for forgiveness and show reverence to God, for someone of any faith. Praying with the face down on the ground is referenced in both the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) and the New Testament (The Gospel) as well as in the Quran. Throughout Hebrew Scriptures, prostrating is a way of bowing on the ground as a sign of deep respect shown toward for certain people and toward God. People also fall in prostration as a sign of conviction, or guilt. Jesus is referenced as falling down and praying on his face to God at Gethsemane, as he asked for the burden to be removed from him. In Islam, prostrating is one of the prescribed postures during the five daily prayers.

Joseph Forgives His Brothers
Genesis 50:15-21

The Consequences of Rebelling Against God
Deuteronomy 9:25-29
25 Throughout the forty days and forty nights that I lay prostrate before the LORD when the LORD intended to destroy you, 26 I prayed to the LORD and said, “Lord GOD, do not destroy the people who are your very own possession, whom you redeemed in your greatness, whom you brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; pay no attention to the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin, 28 otherwise the land from which you have brought us might say, ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to let them die in the wilderness.’ 29 For they are the people of your very own possession, whom you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.”
Ezra Summons the People to Obey the Law

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated. 38 Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.” 39 And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” 40 Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial;a the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.”
