Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

A dynamic vinyasa style of yoga created by Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois.

Ashtanga translates to 8-limbs. Contemporary Ashtanga yoga is a traditional style of yoga developed in India by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois that follows a set sequence of postures for physical therapy, nerve therapy, and ego therapy.

Ashtanga is known as a flowing, vinyasa-style yoga, because there are half-vinyasa between each side of each posture. Because each side of the body has its own work to do, vinyasa help to clear each side of the body so that it is ready for the next side or posture. Traditionally, Ashtanga yoga is taught through parampara, passed down directly from teacher to student in Mysore class, mirroring the method of teaching in India.

Because there are 6 series, one could spend a lifetime practicing Ashtanga yoga. However, most people practice primary and fewer 2nd. Everyone who begins practicing Ashtanga yoga begins learning the Primary Series regardless of prior experience.
